The
northest island of the Cyclades, very so rich in natural beauty and dramatic
differences
in
its lanscape, expands diagonally, on a north-
western axis and a northeastern one
with the
first one with the first one on the
south of
Evia, from which it is separated from
the
stormy, legendary channel of Kafirea
( Cavo
d' oro ) and with the other on the
North of
Tinos with which it is seperated from
Steno.
The abundant waters and the rich vegeta-
tion have enchanted poets since antiquity,
that is
the reason according to which the
island was
named as Lacia ( for its rich vegetation
), Hydrousa ( for its abundant water ), Epagris or
Nonagria ( all the above names have
been registered by the ancient historian Plinius the
Senior ( Natural History, IV, 22 ).
The name Andros is mentioned for the first time by Herodotus and
then by Aeschylus in
his tragedy the Persians ( line 886
- 5th century ). According to mythology, however, that name
was much more older and the island
owes it to its first inhabitant, Andros ( or Andrefs ), a
hero with a divine origin.
